Start-Up Visa Program

The Start-Up Visa program seeks to attract innovative companies that can complete a global scale. Canada is looking for entrepreneurs who are interested to grow their company in Canada. Applicants are required to link with investors such as venture capitalist firms, angel investors groups and business incubators from whom they will receive funding, guidance, and expertise in opening and operating their business in Canada.

A Path To Permanent Residence

Applicants that have acquired at least 12 months of
Canadian work experience through the start-up visa
may apply to become permanent residents.

Program Benefits:

  • Up to 5 shareholders can apply (each must have 10% equity or more)
  • Receive a work permit to develop the business
  • Spouses will receive an open work permit
  • Children will be authorized to attend school
  • Become a Permanent Resident in 1-2 years

Program Requirements:

  • Business must be incorporated in Canada
  • Applicant must own a qualifying (technology related) business with at least 10% voting rights (a maximum of 5 partners can apply)
  • A portion of the company’s core business must be conducted in Canada
  • Business must secure a letter of support from a designated organization
    such as a venture capital firm, angel investor group, or business
    incubator. The immigrant entrepreneur must meet the following criteria:
  • Obtain a total investment of at least $200,000 from one or more designated venture capital funds.
  • Obtain a total investment of at least $75,000 from one or more designated angel investors.
  • Be accepted into one of the designated business incubator programs.
  • Meet the minimum English language requirements (CLB Level 5) in English or French in all four modules: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • Applicant must have sufficient funds available for settlement in Canada.

The Intra-Company Transfer program offers foreign companies the opportunity to transfer executives and key staff to Canada and obtain temporary work permits. This program can be used when there is an acquisition, joint venture/mergers, opening a branch location or subsidiary of the foreign company.

Who can be transferred?

  • Owners (sole owner or shareholder serving in an executive capacity)
  • Executives (President, CEO, CFO, COO, & Vice Presidents)
  • Senior Managers (General Managers, Sales Managers, Production Managers, Quality Managers, and Middle Managers)
  • Specialized Knowledge (Employees with unique in-house training on policies and procedures relating to their products and/or services, or those that have proprietary knowledge and advanced expertise in a particular area as it relates to the business products/services and/or operations)

Program Requirements:

  • Foreign company and Canadian company must have relationship of
    ownership & control
  • Foreign company must be in business
    operation for at least one (1) year in the
    past three (3) years
  • Foreign company must have at least 10
    employees
  • Foreign company must be financially sound to be able to support the expansion and/or development of the Canadian company
  • Canadian company must be able to
    create Canadian jobs
